BAME CIC in Glasgow, Scotland. Empowering black and minority women.

Inspiring Women to Nurture, Lead and Excel

DAWSUN is an ethnic minority, female-led community interest company dedicated to improving all forms of inequalities in Glasgow, Scotland. Our goal is to reduce inequalities in the community through research, life-long learning and mentoring. Since our inception in 2018, DAWSUN has focused on research-led, impact-oriented initiatives that drive change in the African and other Ethnic Minority communities.

Several issues affect families, women and children in African and Africans living in the diaspora, including intergenerational poverty, financial exclusion and different types of inequalities. Not only do we undertake independent research within the African and other Ethnic Minority communities in Scotland, but we also run a number of programmes that seek to alleviate these particular challenges.

If you would like to find out more about the work we do at DAWSUN, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at info@dawsun.org.

We refer to our core ideology as W.I.N.N.E.R, which encourages Womanhood, Inclusiveness, Nurturing, Nobility, Excellence, and Resourcefulness. We provide our members with the platform to engage in finding solutions to the developmental and social challenges facing Africa and the people of African pedigree.

There are a number of social and economic challenges facing the African continent. We believe the best way to overcome these challenges is through effective collaboration with institutions in Africa. The I-PAD is an annual event that brings together leading experts in government and academia from all the world. Speakers discuss, present and analyse the biggest problems and most viable solutions currently facing Africa.

Financial Services Hub  (Sponsored by NSI-COMIC RELIEF Funding)

Financial services have traditionally been a male-dominated sector with relatively few women taking up roles. Despite several initiatives that were designed to redress the imbalance, it seems things have not improved significantly.

At DAWSUN, we believe that progress can be made in this area by empowering underrepresented individuals with the right skillsets to compete within the Financial Services Sector. Knowledge represents the most critical key to success in all aspects of financial services, which is why we advocate Mentoring, Internship, Networking and Training as essential parts of meeting these new talent demands.

Voices Within (Researching the Impact of the COVID-19 within the BAME Community)

Coronavirus has had a massive effect across the UK, but the repercussions have been even more pronounced in the BAME community. We are currently in the process of discovering what emotional, physical and financial impact the pandemic is having on people of African descent living and working in Scotland.

Tutoring for Success: Bridging the Attainment Gap in Scottish Secondary Education

Tutoring for Success project aims at Bridging the Poverty-Related Attainment Gap within Scotland's Secondary Education. The aim is to support the educational needs of learners from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds through the establishment of small-group tuition and study-support groups. With the average rate for a private tutor session between £30 and £42 per hour in Scotland, it is not an option for the families we support. We are leveraging the power of volunteer tutors to bridge the Poverty-Related attainment gaps in English language, Mathematics, Science, and Commercial Subjects.
